How should a roof be framed?

Most houses are framed with rafters or factory-built trusses that carry the roof deck, spaced and braced so the roof stays straight under its own weight and the wind. How do you patch in roof shingles?

The damaged shingle is loosened from the ones around it, the nails are pulled, and a new shingle is slid into place, nailed under the course above and sealed down. What are the downsides of fiber cement siding?

It is heavy, it has to be painted and its joints caulked to keep water out, and it can crack if it is nailed too tightly or the wall behind it moves. Like any siding, it lasts longer when the gutters and roof edge keep water off it. We look at siding along with the roof during a free inspection.
